Training your parakeet to step up on your finger gives you a convenient way to remove him from his cage. And the training presents an opportunity to bond with your bird. Ensure that your parakeet is comfortable with you before starting training. Sing or talk softly to your parakeet. Drape your hand inside for exploration. Try hand feeding him. To start training, press an extra perch across your parakeet’s abdomen just above the feet. Say the UP command and press hard enough so your parakeet steps up on the perch. Practice this procedure and then do the same thing with your finger on top of the perch. Eventually your parakeet will step up on your finger alone.
