Did you know that bloat is a dangerous disease that can affect all breeds of canines including the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel? Bloat may be more common in dogs with long, deep chests, but it can happen to any breed. It tends to cause difficulty breathing, expanded abdomen, hunched back appearance indicating pain, lethargy, and eventual collapse. These symptoms are caused when large amounts of gas, food or fluid becomes trapped in the stomach and causes it to expand. It expands so much that the stomach lining tears and pushes into the surrounding organs causing the blood flow to stop. Bloat can happen when a dog eats too quickly or drinks to quickly after strenuous exercise or activity. There is no cure for bloat. Immediate veterinarian attention is needed. Surgery is generally the only option to relieve the pressure or ensure the stomach doesn’t twist. Learn more about bloat and ways to spot it by talking to your vet clinic Bend, OR.
