Why Guinea Pigs Need Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an essential vitamin for guinea pigs. They need adequate intake of vitamin C from their daily diet because their bodies are unable to produce it. Guinea pigs need about 10-30 mg of dietary vitamin C per day. Inadequate intake of vitamin C, even in as little as 2 weeks, can increase their risk for scurvy.

Symptoms of scurvy in guinea pigs

A lack of vitamin C can cause blood vessels to become fragile. Affected rabbits can experience hemorrhage in their mouth, muscles, skin, and the surfaces of internal organs. There will also be abnormal development of bone and cartilage, swelling and pain in the joints of the limbs, and enlarged adrenal glands. Affected guinea pigs appear to hop like rabbits when walking, or they may be hesitant to move at all. There may also be tooth problems that can lead to difficulty eating. Other symptoms of scurvy include poor body condition, sunken eyes, dull and rough hair coat, depression, weight loss, and signs of pain or tenderness.
