Protecting Dogs from Sunburn

Just like humans, our dogs need sufficient sun protection. The harsh ultraviolet rays from the sun can cause sunburn, and prolonged exposure can eventually increase a dog’s risk of developing skin cancer. Certain dog breeds are more prone to getting sunburn than others. These include those with a thin coat and the light-colored dog breeds. All dogs are vulnerable to sunburn on areas with less or no coat or fur, such as their ears, nose, and stomach.

A dog paws may look tough, however, the paw pads are in fact vulnerable to getting burned if you walk your dog in hot pavements. This is the reason why you should avoid walking your dog during the hottest time of the day, especially during the summer months.

If you see any signs of sunburn or heat stress manifested by your dog, call your pet clinic Cy-Fair immediately
