Mange in Cats

While mange is commonly seen in dogs it can also occur in cats. Mange is a skin disease that can develop and become highly contagious. Mange in cats, as in dogs, is commonly called demodicosis or demodectic mange. It is an inflammatory skin disease caused by mites. These mites are not usually visible and can be on the cat for some time before signs of mange appear. Signs of mange often include unexplained skin irritation or hair loss. If your cat has any of these signs, please call your vet. Your cat needs to be examined to determine if mange is present or if it’s something else (i.e. some cats with an autoimmune disease may show similar signs). In extreme cases of mange where the number of mites on the cat or in the cat’s hair follicles becomes excessive, skin lesions, genetic disorders, immune system problems, or additional hair loss may follow. Consult with your pet clinic Michigan City, IN to learn more.
