Teaching Your Dog the “Lie Down” Command

Teaching your dog the basic “lie down” command will allow you to get your dog to settle and stay in one place. This is considered a more advanced type of obedience drill or training for your dog, so it would be easier for your dog if you have already taught him the “sit” command. To learn this “lie down” drill, your dog must begin in a seated situation. Stay in front of your dog, and with the dog looking at you, hold a food treat to catch his attention. Bring the food treat down or lower, and let your dog follow this movement by lowering its body as well. Make sure to utter “down” plus the dog’s name as you do this. If the dog follows and lies down, instantly give it the food treat plus tons of praise for following your command. Repeat the drill as many times as you can. Improve the drill by getting your dog to do the lying down execution better every time. You can also decrease the amount of food treat with the goal of eventually eliminating it.
