Do Dogs Need Electrolytes?

We all need electrolytes including dogs. What are electrolytes? Electrolytes are the positive or negative charged ions that circulate in your dog’s blood and other bodily fluids. There are a few important electrolyte types that your pet needs. Different illnesses can cause the levels of these particular electrolytes to drop or rise. A few indications that your dog may need electrolytes includes a change in breathing, a change in heart rate, muscle weakness, anxiety, depression, and sometimes lethargy. You should contact your vet right away if your dog has any of these symptom. Your vet will need to determine the exact cause. If it’s an electrolyte imbalance then your dog may be given fluids. Electrolytes can be lost through vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, kidney disease and other illnesses. Your vet may prescribe ongoing electrolyte treatments through fluids, etc. if your dog should need it.
