Guinea Pigs Need Regular Grooming, Too

Guinea pigs, especially those with long fur coats benefit from regular hair brushing. This keeps their fur free of dirt, debris, mats, and tangles. Long-haired cavies will need at least twice-a-day hair brushing while those with short fur can do well with a weekly brush. To meet your pet’s grooming needs, you should have the right grooming tools, such as a finishing brush.

Aside from regular brushing of their coat, cavies have other grooming needs, too. They need to have a monthly nail trim so they won’t develop ingrown and/or overgrown nails. You can use ordinary nail clippers for the purpose. It’s important that nail trimming should be introduced early with lots of positive reinforcement. Always be careful with nail trimming or you may accidentally cut or nip the cavy’s toes causing him to resist your efforts the next time around. You can ask your veterinarians McHenry, IL or a groomer to show you how to trim your guinea pig’s nails properly.
