Taurine is a type of amino acid that is present in rich quantities in animal-based diets. It is also available as a dietary supplement that can be added to dog and cat food. Taurine is considered an essential amino acid for cats because, unlike dogs, cats are unable to make taurine in their body. This is why cat food is supplemented with taurine to ensure adequate daily intake of the nutrient. Generally, dog food is not supplemented with taurine because dogs are able to synthesize taurine in their body from other amino acids –cysteine and methionine. But for canine breeds that have higher risk of taurine-associated dilated cardiomyopathy ( a disease affecting the heart), taurine supplementation may be recommended. These canine breeds include dalmatian, boxer, English setter, American cocker spaniel, and Newfoundland. Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is often considered as the most acquired disease of the heart in large canine breeds.
