Cat parents who are attuned to their pets’ daily routines and behavior will tend to notice even the subtlest changes. While some resolve on their own, some are relatively minor and can easily be managed. But there are life-threatening conditions that needs prompt veterinary attention. Some of the important signs that you should keep an eye out for include the following:
- Display of anti-social behavior especially in cats that are usually affectionate and playful.
- Presence of blood in the urine — The causes range from genetic issues to blood clots to cancer to blockage caused by urine crystals to urinary tract infection to a host of serious health issues.
- Periodontal disease — The cat’s gums may be inflamed and infected. Foul mouth odor is an early symptom of tooth and gum problems.
- Changes in hair coat or excessive shedding — This can be brought about by excessive grooming, abnormal shedding or even the presence of parasites and other skin issues.
- Constipation — A blockage in the gastrointestinal tract, a change in diet or disease of the urinary tract are potential culprits of constipation.
- Diarrhea –If it persists for more than a day, or it appears to be black or bloody, see your veterinarian immediately.
- Respiratory problems — This may include coughing or difficulty breathing.
- Fever — A cat is said to have fever when the thermometer reading is above 102.5F.
- Discharges from the mouth, nose or ears — These can indicate a potential infection.
- Difficulty moving or weakness — It may be caused by bone and joint problems, such as osteoarthritis, or it could be an indication of neurological issues or other medical problems.
