Why Iguanas Sometimes Develop Mouth Rot

Iguanas and other reptiles can get illnesses for different reasons. One illness that is common in reptiles, however, is mouth rot or necrotic stomatitis. Mouth rot is an inflammation of the mouth or oral cavity. It may appear as small hemorrhages on the gums or as large amounts of mucus in the mouth. It can also appear on the inside edge of the mouth. Stress is a big cause of mouth rot. Iguanas may feel stressed because of their environment, overcrowding, parasites that could be internal or external, or even trauma. All of this anxiety can cause a dip in the immune system making it vulnerable to bacteria. The bacteria in the mouth often builds up and causes infection. Your iguana will need medical treatment from your vet in order to get better. Some believe that a vitamin C deficiency and improper calcium or phosphorous levels in the diet can also cause mouth rot. Check with your vet Wichita, KS.
