Cats are Sensitive to Environmental Tobacco Smoke

Studies have shown that cats are specifically at risk of inhaling carcinogens that come from tobacco smoke (or cigarette smoking). This serious risk can be traced to the fact that our beloved feline friends love to groom themselves on a regular basis. This constant cleaning habit puts their oral tissues in constant contact with dangerous carcinogens found in their immediate environment on a daily basis.

Cats can even be extremely sensitive to environmental tobacco smoke (or ETS), so much so that even minute exposure to carcinogens (through second-hand and third-hand smoke, both considered ETS) could have an out-sized impact on their health and well-being.

A recent study has concluded a critical link between cancer incidence in cats and second-hand smoke exposure. If a cat is living with a smoker in a house, that cat has more than twice the risk of acquiring malignant lymphoma (one of the most typical cancer in cats) than cats who live with non-smokers.
