Gerbils and Constipation

Gerbils, like people and other pets, have been known to have constipation issues from time to time. For this reason, it’s a good idea to check your gerbil’s poop when you clean the cage to ensure it is normal. If you notice the poop is very hard or you even see your gerbil straining or having a difficult time pooping then call your vet. Your gerbil will need immediate treatment either in person at the vet or over the phone. Constipation for an extended time could be dangerous. Do not give your gerbil laxatives or fiber supplements meant for people as these can cause more problems in your gerbil’s intestinal tract. Causes of constipation in gerbils may include dehydration, dry stools, or even diets high in fatty foods. Gerbils need a variety in their diet. Talk with your veterinarians Decorah IA about diet changes and other treatments for your gerbil.
