Pigeon Canker

Canker is caused by a protozoan parasite that is typically found in the throat, crop, proventriculus, bile duct, and cloaca of pigeons. Infected pigeons suffer from breathing problems. The parasite can be transmitted between birds that share water bowls and when billing with other pigeons. Young pigeons can also be infected when their mother feeds them with crop milk. The typical symptoms of canker include nodules on the navel or sinuses of affected pigeons. Other symptoms will depend on where nodules are located in the body. Nodules that develop on the throat can cause pigeons to have breathing problems. Canker lesions usually occur only on parts of the body that are closely related to the digestive tract. Other symptoms include diarrhea, lethargy, and weight loss. There may also be bleeding in the bird’s mouth and cloaca. Without prompt appropriate treatment, affected pigeons can die.
