Goats have their share of medical conditions that need proper veterinary attention. If you notice any of the following symptoms, call your vet for advice.
- The goat appears weak or lethargic. The animal may not be as active as usual. Some don’t get up at all.
- There may be problems with the goat’s gait and posture. The head and ears may appear to droop. And the goat may limp or stagger.
- Loss of appetite and/or reduced water intake.
- Head-pressing against solid surfaces, such as the fence or wall.
- Has problem urinating or is not urinating at all
- The ears are held strangely
- Runny or loose feces
- Blisters in the mouth and nose
- Udder feels hot to the touch
- Midsection appears swollen or bloated
- Nasal and/or eye discharges
- Coughing or abnormal breathing
- Excessive bleating
- Separates from the herd
Symptoms that are considered serious emergencies include a goat that is lying down for several hours without getting up or moving, a swollen or bloated abdomen that is usually accompanied by excessive bleating, and separating from the rest of the heard for a considerable length of time.
