Dogs and Ear Infections

Did you know that dogs of all breeds are prone to ear infections? Some dogs more than others. For instance, the Bassett Hound’s ears drag along the ground so the possibility of picking up something to cause an infection is pretty big. Golden Retrievers have ears that tend to fold over and are often prone to yeast infections of the ears. Yorkies, on the other hand, have ears that primarily stick straight up so the chance of infection or debris in the air is smaller. Common symptoms of ear infections include shaking of the head constantly, excessive scratching at the ears, redness of the ear canal, or even blood in the ear canal. There may also be a presence of crustiness or oozing around the ears. If you notice any of these signs, please contact your veterinarian Monticello, NY schedule an exam. Treatment is typically ear drops and antibiotics.
