Ever heard of B.A.R.F. before? It stands for “Biologically Appropriate Raw Foods” – it’s a diet based on the principle that our cats and dogs are natural-born carnivores and have evolved to eat raw food as part of their diet. This means that our pet cats and dogs should have, as part of their diet, raw meat, or bones with raw meat, and raw vegetables. The diet does have some good points to back it up as cooked food will lose some, if not all, of its important nutrients. The diet also excludes food that has any additives, food coloring, preservatives, and other synthetic chemicals to them – they are considered harmful for pets. There are, however, other variations of the B.A.R.F diet that are not too stringent. For example, other advocates may allow for supplementation in the diet. On the other hand, others find that any sort of supplementation is unnecessary and should, therefore, be avoided altogether. They also believe that nutrients derived from natural ingredients will be more than enough to meet their nutritional needs.
