Are you familiar with Degenerative Joint Disease (DJD)? It is a chronic condition that can cause cartilage surrounding the joints to deteriorate in animals including cats. DJD is also known as Osteoarthritis which is a chronic inflammation that occurs due to the deterioration of the joint. This shouldn’t be confused with arthritis, which is often just the swelling or inflammation around the joints. There are difference causes for DJD. Some are primary causes while others are secondary meaning it occurs as the result of another illness. Primary causes are generally considered to be genetic or conditions present at birth. This may include something like a birth defect like a hip that hasn’t formed correctly. Secondary DJD can be caused by trauma or abnormal wear on joints and cartilage. A cat that has hip dysplasia or dislocates his knee cap may develop DJD afterward. Learn more from your veterinarian care Norwalk, CA.
