Cats and Ear Mites

Did you know that cats can get ear mites? If you’ve seen your cat excessively scratching at her ears or shaking her head as if trying to clear her ears then you should contact your vet. Some cats can get ear mites, which are tiny crab-like parasites that are often found in the outer ear or ear canal. Although there are several different types of mites, the most commonly found ear mite in cats is the Otodectes Cynotis. Other symptoms of ear mites could include dried blood in the ear, white dots in the ear (these are the mites), loss of balance, flattened ears or an odor coming from the ears. Treatment will most likely include bathing the cat’s ear and applying ear mite drops over the course of one to two weeks. Treatment of your cat’s entire body may be necessary.
