Stomach Bloating in Rabbits

pet clinic Thorold ON

Have you seen a pet rabbit that experienced bloating? Stomach bloating is a serious and potentially lethal problem. Bloating happens when fluids and/or gas collect in the stomach and this gives rise to a sequence of problems that are potentially life-threatening. Stomach bloating is quite common in pet rabbits due to the fact they are not able to vomit because there is a valve right at the entrance of the stomach that prevents vomiting. When there is saliva or fluid that stays inside the stomach, the material will be subjected to fermentation, and this in turn will create gas and further distend the stomach. As the stomach distends or bulges, the rabbit will experience severe pain. In the long run, the abnormal enlargement will cause a reduction in blood supply to the stomach and in turn, could lead to shock (a medical emergency). Other likely causes of bloating are hairballs, abscess, hernia, or a foreign object in the stomach that has obstructed the digestive tract.

If your pet is exhibiting signs of bloat, take them to a pet clinic Thorold, ON ASAP.
