If you’ve owned a cat before then you may already be familiar with FeLV. If not, here’s some information about FeLV. FeLV stands for Feline Leukemia Virus and it is the second largest cause of death among cats. FeLV is fatal disease that killed approximately 85% of the cats that were infected over a three year time period. The virus can cause anemia or lymphoma in cats as well as suppress their immune system making them highly susceptible to deadly infections. When cats are vaccinated they have a stronger chance of resisting the deadly virus. In fact, research has found that 70% of cats that came in contact with FeLV were able to either resist the infection or overcome it on their own. FeLV affects cats only and is not contagious people or animals. It is transmitted from cat to cat through saliva, blood and possibly urine or feces. Talk with your vet Ashburn, VA to learn more.
