Guinea Pig Care Needs

Have you recently adopted a guinea pig, or are you planning on bringing one into your home soon? These little critters make wonderful pets. And they’re relatively easy to care for. Here are some basic tips:

  • Choose the proper cage. You’ll need a cage that’s big enough to accommodate your pig’s food and water dishes, a play area, and a hiding hut. Make sure it’s a cage with a solid bottom to hold your pig’s wood-shaving bedding material.
  • Feed the right diet. Your pig’s diet will consist of a commercial pellet food, timothy hay, and plenty of fresh fruits and veggies. Cucumbers, squash, orange or apple slices, carrots, and kiwi are a few good possibilities.
  • Practice good handling. Pick your guinea pig up gently, and get them used to human touch as soon as possible. And be patient, as guinea pigs can sometimes be quite skittish.
