Feeding Bearded Dragons

Bearded dragons have special dietary needs that need to be met to keep them healthy and free from diet-related issues. Being omnivores, bearded dragons should have plant and animal components in their diet. Their meat requirement can be satisfied by giving insects that are convenient and inexpensive. A diet that contains too many insects can increase a beardies risk for piling on extra pounds because they don’t get the same amount of physical activity that they have in their natural habitat. Ideally, a beardie’s diet should be composed of 25% insects, 65% vegetables, and 10% fruits. Get essential nutrients into your bearded dragon by offering gut-loading insects. Another way to prevent your pet from becoming obese is to slow down your pet’s eating by spreading out their meal on a plate instead of in a food bowl. Slice vegetables instead of offering them as cubes so your pet will exert more effort to eat. Make sure that there’s fresh clean water that is always available anytime your pet wants to drink. If your pet doesn’t drink as much, spray water on the vegetables to increase their intake and prevent dehydration.
