The most common type of hedgehogs as pets are called the African Pygmies. Their bodies are covered with quills or spines except for their limbs, face, and tummy. But unlike porcupines, these quills are not barbed and they are hollow.
Hedgehogs naturally curl into a ball when they get frightened or perceive any threats; this is their way of protecting themselves, especially the most vulnerable parts of their bodies as mentioned above. They may not look like it but hedgehogs can do a fast sprint that can reach about 6 feet per second before curling into a ball for protection.
Hedgehogs are insectivores therefore in the wild, they would mainly feed on insects for their meal. But being cared for by humans gave them a variety of feeds and they will eat anything you offer. Hedgehogs have a great sense of hearing and this helps keep them away from danger.
