The Elizabethan Collar

Have you ever seen an Elizabethan collar on a pet? Perhaps your own animal friend has had to wear one at some point. Read on to learn more about this essential tool for our pets.

Elizabethan collars are plastic or fabric cones that fasten around a pet’s neck. Their purpose is to stop a pet from inflicting self-harm after surgery, or while they’re recovering from an injury or infection. They’re named after the ornate ruffs worn by the wealthy in Elizabethan-era England, and they’ve been common in veterinary medicine since their inception in the 1960s. The end of the cone should sit near your pet’s nose, which will allow them to eat, drink, and go about their day relatively normally while keeping them from self-traumatizing. Of course, some pets refuse to eat or drink with the collar on; you might have to remove it and then replace it when your pet is done with their meal.
