Skin Infections In Dogs

The skin is the outer covering of the body. It is made of soft, flexible tissues that cover the body.  The skin has three main functions: sensation, regulation, and protection. The skin of dogs contains beneficial microorganisms that are regular inhabitants of the skin. These are natural flora. On the other hand, when a canine’s health is not in the best condition, these harmless microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi reproduce giving rise to a skin infection. Itching and persistent scratching can break the skin surface and skin lesions will become moist and ooze. The skin lesions and the discharge can have a distinct smell and may attract flies which can only worsen the problem. Yeast infections cause the dog’s skin to become greasy and their bodies may exude a strong undesirable odor. The dog’s skin will thicken and will have a black cobblestone look.

Any sign of skin or hair coat problem should be brought to the attention of your recommended veterinarian Washington DC.
