Pet cats and dogs can suffer from urinary tract infections at any time in their lives. Knowing the common predisposing factors can go a long way in protecting your pet against the problem. Here are the most common ways that pets may acquire urinary tract infection:
- Bacteria that get picked up by your pets from their fecal matter or other things can multiply in their urinary bladder which can lead to infection. And various ways can increase the risk of your pets developing UTI, and these are the following:
- Females are more prone to UTI than males.
- Pets with weak immune systems are more prone to having UTI. This includes young or old cats and dogs, animals in their late stages, or those with pre-existing health problems such as periodontal disease or cancer, and cats with FLV or FIV ( that is feline leukemia virus, and feline immunodeficiency virus, respectively).
- Pets with diabetes mellitus are more prone to having bladder infections.
- Obese pets that decrease their flexibility over time may not be able to groom their behinds and the feces can be left behind and accumulate on them.
- Pets that have bladder stones
- Pets suffering from incontinence
