It may sound odd, but the Akita is both an old and a new dog breed. The Akita technically originated in Japan centuries ago on the island of Honshu in the Akita prefecture. The dog was bred to endure cold polar like temperature and move freely up steep mountains and through deep snow. The dog was seen as a special breed reserved for royalty. Since then the Akita has been seen as a symbol of health and well being. Although originating long ago in Japan, the Akita didn’t reach the U.S. until 1936 when one was given to Helen Keller as a gift. After that, American soldiers began brining Akitas home with them after finishing their tour in Japan after World War II. Since then the Akita has slowly worked its way into the hearts of the U.S. people and is known to be a docile and friendly companion when trained from an early age.
