Miliary Dermatitis is a skin problem that is common in cats. These are lesions found on the skin of a cat, like millet seeds. They appear in your cat’s skin like tiny, round skin bumps thus the name. Cat with this condition has a lesion that is red and raised, and often there might also be crusting. Usually, these lesions develop on a cat’s back. There are factors that can predispose cats to miliary dermatitis. These include:
· Lice
· Mites
· Fleas
· Food Allergies
· Hypersensitivity to environmental allergens
· Autoimmune Condition – the immune system cannot identify some of the body cells so it attacks them.
· Adverse reactions to specific drugs
To identify the cause of the problem, your veterinarian will conduct a thorough examination and some tests such as a skin scraping, dietary modification, an allergy test, or fungal culture. How the treatment procedure would go depends on the primary cause. Treatment may vary from antihistamines, immunotherapy, steroids, giving supplement with essential fatty acids (EFAs), etc.
Any sign of skin and/or hair coat problem should warrant a visit to your veterinary clinic Spring Hill, TN.
