Did you know that being overweight or obese is bad for rabbits? All this excess weight can pose health problems to your pet later on. Here are some of the risks:
· Pododermatitis is a common condition in rabbits that do not get enough physical activities. This condition is also called bumblefoot and is characterized by wounds on the feet. The wounds develop when the feet are forced to support the rabbit’s excess weight or when the rabbit walks on rough surfaces.
· Myiasis refers to maggot infestation. An overweight or obese rabbit becomes less flexible so it cannot reach far areas of the body to be groomed. The neglected area of the body becomes dirty and becomes the breeding ground for maggots. If myiasis is not attended to immediately, it can lead to secondary bacterial infections.
· GI stasis is a common health issue among rabbits. This is also called ileus.
