Grooming Needs Of Long-Haired Dogs

The frequency of brushing a dog’s hair coat will depend on the type of hair coat that they have. While the grooming needs of most short-haired dogs are easy and hassle-free, long-haired dogs tend to be more complicated. Their long hair coats need to be brushed more often to prevent matting and tangling.

Long, Silky Coats
Dogs that have luxurious, long coats, such as Yorkshire terriers, need attention daily. Running a slicker brush through their hair coat will help remove loose hair before they can get tangled or fall off to the ground. If they have hairs in between their paws, it’s a good idea to trim them off as they can gather dirt, debris, and other foreign materials that can possibly cause injury.

Long Hair That’s Frequently Matted
Long-haired pets should be brushed daily to prevent mats and remove tangles. Gently remove tangles using a slicker brush and then comb using a bristle brush. The hair coat can be trimmed but not so close to the skin. Click here.
