Hyperthyroidism is a condition characterized by too much thyroid hormone. The thyroid gland produces the excess hormone. Hyperthyroidism can also be caused by an adenoma or a benign tumor. This condition is common among older cats.
Cats suffering from hyperthyroidism can be hyperactive, experience weight loss, gain appetite, drinks more water than necessary, more urine output, and unable to groom. This condition is fatal so it needs immediate medical attention.
Radioactive iodine (I-31) is a lesser-known treatment for cats. Those cats that underwent this treatment are reported to live for more than four years, on average, compared to those who were given oral medications. The iodine procedure only requires one injection, and most cats don’t need to return for a second dose.
