The Physical Traits of the Australian Cattle Dog

Did you know that the Australian Cattle Dog was developed in the early 1800s by the Australian settlers? Designed to herd livestock over rough terrain and for long distances, this breed is hearty and healthy. The Australian Cattle Dog comes in two colors, which include bluish gray and brownish red. They earned the nickname “Blue Heeler” and “Red Heeler” because of their coloring and ability to nip at the heels of livestock to make them move. An Australian Cattle Dog has a double coat with a rain resistant top layer. He is typically a medium size dog that may come with “pirate” like markings on his face. For instance, some of the cattle dogs have a dark patch over one eye while others have a mask or dark patches over both eyes. The breed has a long undocked, curvy tail.
