Scent-Marking In Cats

The skin glands of a cat come in two main types – sebaceous glands and sweat glands.  Sebaceous glands have a close association with the skin’s hair follicles.  They produce sebum, a somewhat oily secretion that helps to waterproof the hair coat and helps in making the skin more supple.  Also, there are parts of the cat that have larger versions of the sebaceous glands, like the cat’s scrotum, prepuce, lips, eyelids, chin, and the top part of the tail’s base.  These larger versions of the glands are the ones making the cat’s own brand of scent, an important factor in marking with scent.  This is the reason why cats go and rub those mentioned body parts repeatedly on certain objects, for marking.

If you have noticed, cats leave greasy black-brown patches on the surfaces or objects she rubs against.  Your cat also rubs against you so she can “mark” you.If you observe any sudden changes in the behavior of your pet, take time to bring your pet to your pet clinic Washington DC.
