A cat has two main kinds of skin glands, sebaceous glands, and sweat glands. Sebaceous glands are related to the skin’s hair follicles. These are the glands that make sebum, the oily secretion that makes the animal’s hair waterproof, also making the skin supple. Larger versions of the sebaceous glands also exist on the cat’s lips, eyelids, chin, scrotum, prepuce, and also along the top area of the animal’s tail base. Larger sebaceous glands like this are the makers of the animal’s signature scent, and this is important when scent marking. This is why a cat will often rub her chin, forehead, lips, and also the base of her tail on certain objects to mark them. You will also notice greasy, brownish-black patches on these surfaces or objects where your pet cat frequently rubs her body. Your pet cat also often rubs against you, marking you as hers.
Any abrupt changes to your cat’s behavior have to be consulted with your veterinarian Folsom, CA.
