When Not To Use A Muzzle For Your Dog

Muzzles are sometimes misused. Unfortunately, dogs can get hurt or be in pain. Improper use can also lead to unwanted behavior.

Muzzles serve a purpose for both humans and pet dogs. But never use a muzzle for the following reasons:

  • To punish your dog. In some cases, dogs will get traumatized if they are not properly introduced to the muzzle. The owners may also use a muzzle to punish unwanted behavior. This method will eventually lose its effect. Your pet dog might lose his trust in you and might get angry whenever he sees the muzzle.
  • To get your dog to stop barking. If your dog’s incessant barking becomes irritating, you might think that putting a muzzle on will stop him from doing it. While it might serve the purpose at first, eventually your dog will find a way to continue barking even if he is wearing a muzzle. You will get better results if you use positive training on your dog.
  • To prevent your dog from engaging in destructive behavior. A muzzle on your dog will stop him from chewing on your household items. However, dogs shouldn’t wear muzzles for a long time and are unsupervised. Also, the dog will not understand the reason for wearing such. Instead, you have to find out why your dog is being destructive and think of ways to resolve the issue. You might be surprised to find out that your dog just needs more stimulation or is suffering from separation anxiety.
