A cat of any breed can eventually develop some mobility problems as they age. For instance, there are cats that develop arthritis or similar issues like joint diseases that become degenerative, and also something that has been called the Schiff-Sherrington phenomenon or syndrome. Should your cat have some issues moving around, set an appointment with your veterinarian. Your car showing signs of mobility problems does not necessarily mean that she has developed Schiff-Sherrington. Your veterinarian needs to take a closer look at your pet to pinpoint the most likely cause of the immobilization. The Schiff-Sherrington phenomenon usually happens when the animal’s spinal cord gets cut or severed by a lesion found in the lower back. This small lesion may have been from the more common intervertebral disk illness or also possibly, spinal trauma. Possible symptoms of Schiff-Sherrington are losing the ability to walk and/or stand, forelimb extension, unusual gait, and possibly paralyzed rear limbs.
