Fur slip refers to the shedding of large clumps of hair coat when a chinchilla is stressed or mishandled. This is one way for a chinchilla to save itself. One of the main reasons why a chinchilla becomes stressed is when it is not handled properly. Keep in mind that the proper way of holding a chin is by holding it near the base of its tail, or where the tail and body meet. Allow the chin to sit on the person’s hand while holding the base part of the tail. A person who does not know how to handle a chin properly may end up squeezing the chest or abdomen of the animal. The chin will feel that his movement is restricted, and will try to get out of the person’s grasp. This is the scenario where fur slip occurs. The chin will shed voluminous hair just to be free from the person’s hold.
