Gerbils are social creatures. These animals like to be with other gerbils. But the challenge lies in introducing another gerbil to the ones you already have at home.
When gerbils are 10 weeks old, it can be difficult to get them to meet a new member. But if they were much younger, it would not be as tedious. There are ways to get around this dilemma. If you want to add a new one to the pack, you can do so without anyone getting hurt. Here are some points to remember:
Do not introduce the new gerbil to the group. The resident gerbils could gang up on the new one and hurt it.
A better way to introduce the latest gerbil to the group would be to place everyone in a cage with a wire-mesh divider. Make sure the divider has holes so everyone can see the newest addition to the group. But because of the divider, no one will get hurt.
It is more convenient to introduce a younger gerbil to the older one.
Male gerbils take longer to adjust to a new member, rather than female gerbils.
