If you own a dog like the Irish Setter did you know that they can often develop an illness known as Hypothyroidism or Thyroid Hormone Deficiency? Most often, Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland fails to produce the needed T4 and T3 hormones required for a normal metabolism in canines. This may cause lethargy, mental dullness, weakness, weight gain and hair loss among other things. Treatment is usually given in the form of medication and synthetic hormones. A change in diet to reduce fat intake may also be required. Over time, the Irish Setter’s symptoms may resolve requiring the medication and hormone dosages to be adjusted by your vet. Following your vet’s instructions and prescribed medication dosage is vital to managing your Irish Setter’s Hypothyroidism. Never adjust medication dosages yourself. Always monitor your Irish Setter’s condition and call your vets Carmel Valley for assistance if for further information.
