There is some discussion regarding if what is currently known as black bear hamsters is a true hamster breed or perhaps just another variant in the coloration of Syrian hamsters. This black bear variant was once bigger when compared to the usual Syrian breed. Black bear hamsters that are of show quality were once 5 or even 6 inches long, but because of commercial breeding, these hamsters are now about the same measurements as the usual Syrian hamster. The same is also true for training ease and their personalities. Their name, black bear, comes from America and it refers to hamsters that have a resemblance to black bears and not likely from the breed’s disposition. Differences in this characteristic just become each individual animal’s personality.
Usually, the coat is pure black or with an exception to the feet and underbelly that are white. This black coloration can also appear as gradations of dark brownish to black. The animal’s hair coat texture and length can be long-haired, rex, or satin. You will also find variations with white patches called panda bear hamsters.
