When you get a cold, do you stop to ask yourself if it’s possible for your cat to catch your cold? If you own a Birman cat or another breed of cat then you might want to think twice before getting to close to your feline friend when you have a cold. That’s right; your cat may actually be in danger of catching your cold. Dogs can only catch a cold from other dogs; however, it is different for cats. Why? Cats are designed differently than dogs and they can easily pick up a germ and spread it to other cats. The cold virus can actually attach itself to cells in the respiratory tract of your Birman cat similar to the way it does in humans. As a general rule of thumb, make it a habit to wash your hands before and after handling your pet to avoid spreading germs. Call your veterinarian Columbia MD if your cat appears to be sick.
