Possible Issues With Pet Food Item Recalls

The usual reasons why there could be a pet food recall are packaging issues, nutritional imbalances, foreign materials, and contamination.

Packaging issues

●Faulty packaging methods of food could trigger a recall of pet food.  Take as an example, if the “pop tab” found on canned pet food has a defect, then moisture could enter the container, and inside could become a breeding pool for bacteria and mold.

Nutritional imbalance

●There are times when pet food could have too much or too little of a specific nutrient.  This nutritional imbalance could cause nutritional overdoses or deficiencies, and both of these have the potential of making pets sick.

Foreign materials

●When the pet food is undergoing processing, it is possible that small pieces of the machinery or equipment used for processing could break off, thus ending up with the food.  Small bits of plastic or metal like these could cause damage to a pet’s gastrointestinal tract lining if ingested.

Contamination

●Mold or bacterial contamination could also be present in pet food.  And the contamination can be coming from the equipment that processes the food or the pet food itself.  Pet food could also become contaminated by hazardous chemicals like melamine.  There was a major 2007 pet food recall that was triggered by melamine contamination.
