Ripened tomatoes are generally safe for dogs like the Basset Hound when given in small quantities. However, un-ripened tomatoes can be very dangerous for your dog. If your Basset Hound eats a tomato from a vine, make sure he does not eat the leafy greens as these parts contains most of the toxins. If you think your dog ate something poisonous or toxic call your vet right away even if you’re not exactly sure he ate the poisonous parts. In general, tomatoes and potatoes are members of the Solanum species and are part of the nightshade family of plants, which contains toxic alkaloids that can be harmful to pets. If these toxins are eaten in large quantities your Basset Hound may start to show signs of excessive drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, drowsiness, confusion, weakness, behavior changes, dilated pupils, or even a slowed heart rate. Notify your vet London ON if your Basset has any of these symptoms.
