Grooming In Pet Cats

Grooming is an essential part of your cat’s daily activities.  If you have more than one cat, they will go ahead and groom each other as well.  A cat’s tongue has barbs on its surface.  This helps in removing any loose fur efficiently.  Your cat’s forepaws act as washcloths, and her teeth can help in removing stubborn debris and dirt.

A mother will groom her newly born kittens.  She will wake them so they can suckle, a sign that she cares for her young.  She will lick the kittens’ abdomens so they will be stimulated to eliminate.  Soon after, about a month, the kittens will learn how to groom all by themselves, each other, and their mother.

Littermates grooming each other is called “allogrooming.”  Even adult cats continue to display this behavior.  With kittens, it helps in making the bonds of being littermates all that much stronger and is an essential component of socialization.

If you notice any signs of infection, parasites, and other skin and hair coat problems, it is a good idea to make an appointment with your animal hospital Marietta, GA so your pet can undergo a thorough checkup.
