Some Reasons Bones Are Bad For Your Dog

There are quite a few reasons why a bone might not be a good idea to offer to your pet.  Below are four of them:

  • Bones might get lodged in the animal’s intestine or stomach causing a blockage: If your pet swallows some fragments or pieces of bone that are not quite small enough that they can move all the way through the animal’s intestines, surgery might be required to get them out.  Another hazardous “treat” that often results in gastrointestinal blockage is corn cobs.  Rope toys and rawhide bones that are knotted might seem like can withstand vigorous chewing, but every so often rope strings or big rawhide pieces get ingested and get lodged in the animal’s intestines.
  • The marrow inside and meat around the bones could cause diarrhea and upset stomachs: Bone marrow is largely fat, causing diarrhea and intestinal inflammation.  And the tissues that are attached to raw bones tend to have bacteria like Salmonella or E. Coli, both of which can get your dog and/or you very ill.
  • Fragments of bone could cause pain and constipation: Fragmented bones are usually sharp and when your pet tries to get them passed, they scrape all the rectum’s sensitive lining causing bleeding and pain.
  • Peritonitis: Since bones are very brittle, they tend to break down into small sharp fragments when chewed.  Fragments like these can puncture the intestines, stomach, or esophagus, leading to an infection of the chest or abdomen.  This bacterial infection is challenging to treat and may need an emergency appointment with your best veterinarian Frisco, TX since peritonitis is fatal.
