How To Discourage Puppies From Biting And Nipping

It is best to stop the puppy from biting or nipping as soon as he does it. Teaching the puppy to stop biting usually happens at 4 to 5 months. When the puppy is at this age, the teeth are already sharp.

When the puppy starts to bite you with his sharp teeth, say “Ouch” loudly and remove your hand. In this manner, the puppy will understand that the biting behavior is not acceptable.

Do not make the mistake of allowing the puppy to continue the biting behavior. This is unacceptable. In the same manner, do not scream or wave your hands around when the puppy bites you. The puppy might take this behavior as something positive and will continue to bite or nip at you.

Dogs like to get their owner’s attention. And if they think that biting or nipping is one way to get attention, then they will continue to do so.  It is also important to inform the local vet Shreveport LA of any change in the dog’s behavior. The change could mean health problems that need prompt medical attention.
