Heartworm is one of the most dangerous parasites a dog can contract. These disgusting worms are quite aptly named: they take up residence in dogs’ hearts, as well as their lungs and arteries. As the worms grow, they start to interfere with these vital organs. Needless to say, this is very dangerous. Heartworm infestations can unfortunately be fatal if left untreated.
What many people don’t realize is that mosquitoes carry heartworms. Infestations are not spread directly from dog to dog. Your dog could get infested anywhere there are mosquitoes … even inside your home. While there are treatments for heartworm, these can be quite costly, and aren’t much fun for your pet.
It’s worth noting that cats can also get heartworms. It’s rare for a kitty to have more than one, but even one can cause serious—and potentially fatal—organ damage.
If your canine companion isn’t currently on heartworm medication, contact your vet Teller County, CO right away. It’s much easier to protect dogs from getting heartworms than to try and treat infestations. Learn more here.
