Small Hound Dogs: Miniature Long-Haired Dachshund

Hounds have been blessed with amazing talents like baying, tracking, and hunting.  Baying is the hound’s method of calling out, signaling to their masters or other hounds.  Baying is quite different with hounds than the non-hound dog breeds.  There are various dog breeds also classified as hounds.  The miniature long-haired dachshund is one of these.

This breed is the smallest of the hound breeds of dogs.  It might come as a surprise to you that the small adorable Dachshund is considered a hound dog.  This breed’s hound origins date from the 15th century in Germany where the breed was taught how to hunt small badgers.

But there are some experts who say that grouping Dachshunds with the other hounds might have been a contextual mistake.  The “hund” part of their name might have been thought of to translate to “hound” when it is supposed to translate instead to “dog.”  These dogs were bred to be used for their instinctive abilities to hunt small-sized game as well as burrowing critters.
