Interesting Lionhead Rabbits

Lionhead bunnies are popular because of their lion mane-like appearance.  Lionheads have two distinctive types of fur, the short and the long ones.  The long ones are particular in the mane area, causing the lion’s mane appearance which is where its species name comes from, and also in the flank area which causes a somewhat skirt-like appearance.  This ‘mane’ causes a bit more grooming than usual but is an easy compromise for the playful bunny.  A lionhead’s fur is usually of tortoiseshell or white color.

This lion’s ‘mane’ comes from two hereditary genes in rabbits.  Inheriting two of these genes will cause the lionhead to sport a grand mane which can last a lifetime, while inheriting only one copy of the gene, will cause the mane to be thinner and may likely disappear as the rabbit goes into old age.

Lionheads are very popular and there is a high priority and demand among breeders.  They are very friendly with a docile temperament. Your vet Aurora CO is a valuable resource when it comes to issues that affect your pet’s health and behavior.
